Ah, Balkis…

Reading the Sunday papers has never been this interesting before. Lately, the main stream media is bolder and wiser after years of being discarded by the public. A new Star columnist, Zainah Anwar, thinks that reading the morning papers could become a habit again. I agree with her. The MSM is heading towards the right direction. But they have a lot to catch up with those journo-bloggers and their flaming blogs.

A day after Khir Toyo’s faux pas being made public as he came to his wife’s defense in justifying the ridiculous amount of money pumped into Balkis – a society presides over by the Selangor assemblymen & MPs – another bomb blasted right in front of Balkis’s door. This time the public raised an eyebrow over the transfer of RM9.9 million from Balkis account to Bakti – an association of the wives of minister & deputy ministers – days after Selangor fell to the Pakatan Rakyat. Balkis’ president, Zaharah Kechik, argued that they have legal rights to do so because Khir was still the caretaker Selangor Mentri Besar at that time.

She assured that they consulted their bright lawyers every step of the way to ensure the legalityย of the money transfer and the dissolution of the society. Balkis’s office bearers decided to dissolve the society on March 11 after they felt that they would no longer be “effective” under the new state government.

As a practising lawyer myself – albeit reluctantly – I am of the view that lawyers will cook up anything to steer their clients away from the technicality of the law. But Zaharah must ask herself whether such move was done bone fide (in a good faith) or was the move mercenary?

Bukit Lanjan MP and a friend, Eli Wong, thinks that the move tantamount to breach of trust and flight of funds. The new mentri besar of Selangor, Khaled Ibrahim, requests Zaharah to return the money and to hold the dissolution or they will pursue with the legal action against the office bearers.

And Balkis plunges deeper into misery…

Me? I don’t want to be one of those bright-conniving-overpriced legal eagles.๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Elviza,
It is the kind of things desperate people do to cover up some wrong doings without really thinking rationally and abetted by lawyers too eager to make some killings themselves.
It reminds us of the Altantuya murder when the C4 was used to annihilate potential figures who may expose their wrong doings.
Hearing it from a practising lawyer yourself makes your allegation of abettment very real.

    Reluctantly practising Pak…๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Salam Sis,

I am not a legal eagle, but my layman thoughts says she is doing the wrong thing! On top of everything else, I ask this: what is an NGO doing with a huge amount of fund? If truly it is meant for charity works, should not a large portion of the fund have been given out already?

Oh! I like your last statement!๐Ÿ™‚

It doesn’t take a legal eagle to smell a rotten fish bro. It takes heart and courage dont ya think?

  3. Hmm… is this blog heading in Rocky’s direction? Ah, this. Ah, that? I thought bro’ Rock had that copyrighted under nascent IP laws… hehee…

Now don’t pull a face. I jez lurrrve to poke ya inna ribs a little. I’m outraged at this episode too but I could never put my thoughts down well… Syabas sis. Give ’em hell. Time to learn not to underestimate the rakyat. We’re not all nincompoops. We, in fact, have a bright legal eagle on our side!

Good thing she ain’t overpriced and conniving!๐Ÿ™‚

Ha ha ha ha! Weh, I got not idea how to title the post lah… I can’t name them all Sleepless in Setiawangsa can I๐Ÿ™‚

And bro, today the auditors deny that they have audited the account of Balkis. What a slap on the face for Khir. Be careful when you say something these days… they might backfire!

  4. Exactly! Can we have a clarification what was the money used for? and I always thing that being poor or rich is about self character building, I rather all this funds put into more basic fundamental educations and course, rather than just giving it out.

And Shawn, today the auditors deny that they have audited the accounts. Tsk tsk tsk…

  5. The first thing that caught my eyes was the fact that this persatuan datin-datin is so kaya one. How do they raised their funds? Selling kuih to contractors for RM100,000/dozen?

And with that much money, how come we still have that program “bersamamu” every week? Unless the definition of poor is al fayed of harrods.

Oh yeah… usually they are the one sending kuih raya to our soldiers, right?

    Sister,

Ohhh I watch Bersama mu with mama sometimes and I always end up in sobs and smsing my phone bills away. Sedey kan?

And of course we have to live with those globe-trotting, fund-raising (yeah right) MPs wives and their bizzarre transfer of money!
