Kalau Roboh Kota Melaka …

Yusri and I are old friends, we went all the way back to that freezing continent of England, and beyond. The fact that he married one of my closest friends just added tenderness to the friendship. Apart from being an exemplary husband and intense lover to Kak Long, Yusri, has an added gift to his name. He is highly articulate and when he writes in Bahasa Melayu, my mind would be stupefied, drunk in the beauty of classic Malay language.

Yusri recently wrote series of old Malay pantun on his Note’s section at Facebook. And I get all wax lyrical about it, I keep reading it even days after he published it. My favourites are:

Kiri jalan kanan pun jalan
Sama tengah pokok mengkudu
Kirim jangan pesan pun jangan
Sama-sama menanggung rindu

Surat ku layang untuk berkata
Penyampai hasrat kata di hati
Kalau sungguh kasihkan saya
Jangan dibuang sampai ke mati

Kalau roboh kota Melaka
Papan di Jawa hamba dirikan
Kalau sungguh bagai dikata
Rasa nak mati di pangkuan Tuan

I have said it before, and I will say it again: I want to be poet and die in pursuit of the same.

  1. Makan sirih di dalam puan,
    hendak tambah berasa malu,
    Kalau betul rindumu tuan,
    kirimlah salam di angin lalu.

    Bedak dibeli untuk sapuan,
    supaya dipandang tiadalah jemu,
    rebahlah diri di atas pangkuan,
    ku dendangkan lagu untuk tidurmu.

Dear Kak Teh, alamak! lagi best lah Kak Teh punya. Ah, dang!

  2. Anak yu disangka lampam,
    Kalau lampam mana locatnya?
    Kalau rindu disangka demam,
    Kalau demam mana pucatnya?

    Limau purut lebat di pangkal
    Batang selasih condong uratnya
    Hujan ribut dapat ditangkal
    Hati kasih apa ubatnya?

    Buah jering di atas para
    Diambil budak bawa berlari
    Kering laut tanah Melaka
    Baru saya mungkirkan janji

Frank? Is that really you? You mean to tell me an Englishman comes up with this? Hmmmm…

  3. Ok my turn…

    ehem…

    Pantai gembira dibadai ombak,
    Tiada rindu menyelimuti duka,
    Walau hati segagah tambak,
    Cair jua dilamun dek cinta.

    Jika takut ombak nan besar,
    Usah berumah bertebingkan laut,
    kasih sejati walau dikisar,
    cinta dihati tetap berpaut.

    Kerp my fave bro,

You are in love as always, aren’t you?

  4. Ehem,…round kedua:

    Bau semerbak si bunga Cina,
    dibawa hantaran gendang dipalu,
    entah mengapa tidur tak lena,
    makan sesuap undur selalu.

    Kalau roboh Kota Melaka,
    kerahlah orang naik perahu
    janji di mulut permainan belaka,
luka di hati siapa yang tahu.

    Hati mana segagah tambak,
    roboh juga dibelai sayang,
    rindu datang bagaikan ombak,
    menusuk kalbu fikiran melayang.

Okay Kak Teh… the best from you (to me at least) is, “janji di mulut permainan belaka, luka di hati siapa yang tahu” Ouch!

  5. Oh. you made me search for Kuntum Pertiwi Buku 1, Buku 2, Buku 3 …, and I’m late for work. Below is a lovely pantun (an extract) – not a display of a love for someone, rather a show of love for a pearly and lovely place.

    Pulau Pinang dilengkar laut
    Tanjung Bungah berbatu-batu
    Kian kukenang hati terpaut
    Indahnya alam tanah airku

    Batu Feringhi pantainya cantik
    Berpasir putih berbatu besar
    Kerana indahnya hati terdetik
    Mata memandang alangkah segar

    Padang Kota di tepi laut
    Tempat orang menjamu selera
    Hatiku tetap akan terpaut
    Pulau Pinang Pulau Mutira.

Hope I can produce an inspiring work in the office today.

(I’ve only gone as far as page 5, mind you).

    Dear aMiR,

Oh! Sorry to have delayed you to work. Tell your superior you met some crazy woman on the net! Heh.
Tell me, which page are you at right now?

  6. Fulamak! Semua orang dok berpantun nih… nak kena pantun jugalah! Nanti nak pikir sat…

    Hmmm…. aiseh…

    Anak itik terenang-renang
    Sorrylah dik, akak tak senang!

(Can I be a poet too?)

    Dear Pi,

LOL. All good poets died destitute Pi! Do you want to be one? Heh!

  7. Sometimes this year, you wrote a poem to your child in bahasa.I showed it to my mommy and she cried after reading that….

You make complete stranger cried with your art.

I am envious of your ability to write from the heart in both languages.

    Good luck

    Dear Admirer,

I am sure you are just being too kind and generous with your compliments. I am still struggling to write everyday unlike some people who just sway people away with their words. I digress…

  8. Elviza,

    Don’t die on me….

I am truly madly deelpy in love with you. Eventhough I never met you. Funny huh?

Have you thought of saying “yes” to my date proposal. Nothing funny, sumpah!

Just dinner, a bottle of wine and dessert. Ok?

    Dear Kuda Lari,

You are relentless, aren’t you? I still have to politely say no to your proposal even though the dinner and dessert sound way too tempting! Rain check?

  9. Kak Teh started the ball rolling. decided to take the cue laa…

just playing a small part of spreading the love around.

hey, that reminds me of the usual stuff.

    all together now…

    Poetry in motion,
    Walking by my side,
    Her lovely locomotion,
    Keeps my eyes…open wide…

Bro, you just made a pantun in English! Oh my…

  10. Alas, I left Buku 1 at home. Don’t lead me astray, I’m easily swayed.

Anyway, don’t think I’ll get that elusive inspiration today. Heve been in Merdeka mode, work wise, these last few days. You too and many others, I bet. Selamat Merdeka.

    aMiR

    My dearest friend,

I am supposed to draft a statement of claim: that was three days ago! Seriously, I need to get out of this blog. Sigh.

  11. Here’s the poem that made my mommy cried, Elviza. I am sure you remember, this is one of your masterpiece I just cut and paste.🙂

    Luqman bintang hati kami,

Kalau ada racun dalam hidup kami,
    Luqman penawarnya.
Kalau ada hasad manusia pada kami,
    Luqman penghakisnya.
Kalau ada kegelapan dalam perjalanan kami,
    Luqman obornya.
Kalau ada resah dalam malam kami,
    Luqman pembawa subuh yang hening.

    Kalau hari esok kami berjaya,
    Itu hadiah buat Luqman.
Kalau hari esok kami lebih beriman,
    Itu panduan hidup Luqman.
    Kalau ada hari-hari kami marah,
    Itu landasan mu, Luqman.
    Kalau ada hari-hari kami pukul,
Itu kerana kami sayang pada mu, Luqman.

Tidak pernah hidup kami diberkati sebegini rupa,
Tidak pernah kami pinta anugerah sehebat ini,
Tidak pernah kami mimpikan kebahagian setala langit,
Tapi hari ini, kami pohon segala-galanya…

    Kerana Luqman kekasih hati kami,
Kerana Luqman anugerah Tuhan buat kami,
Kerana Luqman amanah yang harus kami lunaskan,
Kerana Luqman kami di sini sehingga ke hari mati.

    Selamat Hari Jadi, Luqman.

    Kami panjatkan doa,
Agar Luqman menjadi anak yang sempurna.
    Bijak akal mu,
    Tegar iman mu,
    Indah budi bahasa mu,
    Mudah perjalanan duniawi mu
    Syurga Jannah tetapan abadi mu.

Amin, Amin, Amin, Ya Rabbul Alamin…

    Kami,
    Mommy & Papa.

    Dear Admirer,

Ah, Luqman! He is just the best thing in my life, he makes life worth living. And that dazzling smile of his…

  12. Elviza,
If you haven’t known already, my superior is better looking than Shahrukh Khan, a MCKK old boy, and not as crazy as the Tukar Tiub blogger (sigh) .
    aMiR

    aMiR,

I haven’t the faintest idea that your boss is better looking than Shahrukh Khan! But the fact that he is from MC, oh well, you know… (best not to proceed here, nanti Madsalo boy & Captain Ancient Mariner marah!)

  13. Maam,

When you write, my mind would be stupefied. Perhaps another piece of that spellbinding sleepless in Setiawangsa?

    Sir,

You are just too kind. Thank you for visiting.

  14. Dear E,
    Dang Wati memangku puan
    Senduduk laksan ,gulai tenggiri
    Hebat Sungguh Dirimu Puan
    Seutus tulisan indah terperi

Sudah lah Azlan, malas nak layan you. Call me soon?

  15. Elviza
Before the blogger yang terhangat di pasaran hangat pada you, let me save your skin: It is HishamuDDIN dear. This, by the way, is the only inspiring thing I did so far today.
    aMiR

    aMiR,

I stand corrected Sir! I am so bad with names and the spellings of the same. I am no longer spring chicken, my friend. Do forgive me.🙂

  16. Sis Elviza,

Kak Teh never fails to dazzle me with her seloka. So beautiful that my heart melts. She is like itik taking to the water.

Pi Bani’s sense of humour… sends me to heaven every time.

aMir made me nostalgic. The island I grew up. Fond memories of the close-knit community. I lived with my aunt near the Chinese Swimming Club.

And Kerp the Romeo. “Kalau takut ombak…” Am a kiasu in love. I always treat women as my sisters so that they won’t break my heart.

This morning a friend called me and asked what I was doing. “Oh, I talking to the wall.”

“Told you to get a wife so that you have someone to talk to.”

“Why,” I said, “if she angry with me and I angry with her. In the end I get hypertension and short life. Isn’t it better the wall doesn’t answer back and give me tension?”

    Cheang,

Shhhhhh! Don’t be telling all that to the young hearts out there. You’ ll scare the hell out of them! But marriage, just like other things in life, has its own ups and downs – at least, that’s what I am trying to tell myself. Heh!

  17. Wow Mish…! You’ve started a domino’s effect here… or something like that. But those pantun verses are not mine. They are excerpts from a very long collection of pantun called “Pantun Berkasih”, an ancient heritage from our forefathers. That’s why Tunku Abdul Rahman quoted it in his speech and Tan Sri P.Ramlee in one of his films. Actually, my partners and I (business partners) are writing a book, well, three books actually, about aspects of our beloved country, and one of them is about Malay heritage in architecture, old customs and stuff… AND language… hence, the pantun was searched and found. So, again… sorry if I have somehow misled you into believing the pantun is mine… It is partly my fault for not inscribing any statement of disclaimer of some sort to accompany the pantun. Nevertheless, here’s something that IS mine (comparatively of lesser quality… ofcourse…hehehehee)

    Budi Taulan

    Ke Inderapura berkolek jua
    Mengirim utusan Laksmana merindu
    Budiman peri budi tuan hamba
Terhutang ku durja, terukir di kalbu

    Jika sumbang Lambang Sari ku
    Gundah gulanalah Gemelan ku bertingkah
Tak kunjung puan ku lupa budimu
    Ku nukilkan hikayat, menjadi sejarah

Zeera is napping in the couch. Love from both of us!!

    Yus,

I know you didn’t compose the pantun. I guess I should have written “you reproduce?”

I can’t wait to read the books you are working on…

Love and kisses to Kak Long & the children.

  18. dear mich,

Been a silent reader all the while. While my eyes savoring every beautiful pieces you produce here, my heart constantly adoring your natural talent. Keep on writing, friend!

Would love to share my old time favourite. Been cracking my head all nite to come out with one, but none. Hope this will do..:-p

    Tuai padi antara masak
    Esok jangan layu-layuan
    Kuintai kamu antara nampak
    Esok jangan rindu-rinduan

    Tanam pinang rapat-rapat
    Biar senang puyuh berlari
    Kalau ku pinang-pinang tidak mendapat
    Ku pujuk-pujuk ku bawa lari

    Tanah tinggi si matahari
    Anak kerbau mati tertambat
    Sudah lama daku mencari
    Baru sekarang daku mendapat

Hey, which Liza is this? I got like few Liza on my friends’ list. Sherly Eleeza? Norliza? Hasliza? Suliza? Ah dang! Do come out and reveal yourself…🙂

  19. Jari tersusun tangan dihulurkan,
    jangan dipendam di dalam hati,
    selamat berpuasa Kak Teh ucapkan,
    Ramadan yang mulia kita hormati.

    Tumpang lalu,
Hi&Lo, my interest for all things seloka, pantun and syair is usually spurred on by people like Abang Malaya. And how I miss him, whoever he is. And if he is reading this, I am always ready to bersyair and berseloka with him – any time.

  20. Elviza,
I think we must not suppress our excitement. We ought to express it and share all things beautiful with others. That way we can liberate and reach people. The SoC can wait. It is not the end of the world.

Now that you’ve said it in not so many words, allow me to redo the earlier sentence:
…my superior is better looking than Shahrukh Khan (jaw drop), a MCKK old boy (so?), and not as crazy as the Tukar Tiub blogger (sigh).

By the way, he is in Libya now, or some other country in Africa, but definitely not Morocco. I would find a way to tag along (he he) if it is Morocco. I don’t have to swear this is true, do I?

    aMiR

  21. OK, I’m pantun-deficient. But here goes my lame attempt …

    Si chipul lawa parasnya
    Impian jambu budak kolek*
Tapi bila di check anu nya
Tidak ada kesan benda yang robek

    (sorry it’s rather gross, Mish)

  22. Permisi ya, mau bicara dengan Encik Cheang

Sudah tatap Options keluaran khas Sept 1 sempena Merdeka? Segar mata memandang. All 50 pages on Penang, her beautiful multiracial people, rich history and golden era, and glorious future to be the apex state in Malaysia.

Are you planning to be back in Penang soon?

    aMiR

  23. Enjoy it so much … I jadi buntu to come up with one miserable pantun…
Your poem for Luqman… that was simply beautiful.. nanti nak curi to dedicate to my daughter yeee

    Dear Bapak,

    Bisa saja Pak… anytime!

  24. tetiba aku nak berpantun, dengarkan pantun ku ini ya..

    Terbukti sudah cinta dan rindu
    Ijab dan kabul hingga akhirat
    Suratan takdir telah menentu
    Aku belum dikurnia zuriat

    Berdoa hatiku pada ya Maha
    Agar kasih dibenteng syiar
    Usah ditanya apakah usaha
    Berbagai cara telah diikhtiar

    Malam pertama sungguh hangat
    Leka umpama di alam maya
    Doa kalian diharap sangat
    Moga usaha hasilkan jaya
