Malaysiakini: Sin Chew journalist detained under ISA

(Updated at 9:38 p.m. – Malaysiakini confirmed that Hoon Cheng has been detained under ISA)

Blogging has never been this interesting, if not, outright addictive given the current political turmoil in our beloved homeland. Just when I thought nothing could beat the news of RPK being taken to an unknown location following his arrest under ISA, Tan Hoon Cheng, Sin Chew Daily’s journalist, has been arrested at 8: 30 p.m. at her home in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Reasons for arrest remain unknown at press time.

Malaysiakini has the report:

Sin Chew Daily journalist Tan Hoon Cheng has been arrested today at 8.30pm at her home in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

It is unclear whether she has been arrested under the Internal Security Act, which allows for detention without trial.

It is learnt that she has been taken by the police to the Penang police headquarters.

Tan had reported that local Umno chieftain Ahmad Ismail had allegedly said that Chinese Malaysians are “squatters” in the country.

Her report sparked a nationwide outcry, resulting in Ahmad being suspended by Umno for three years.

Sin Chew had three days ago came out strongly to defend Tan, who was accused by Ahmad for misreporting his comments.

At times like this, subscription to Malaysiakini has never look so worthy while the rest of MSM’s prints remain on the shelves of the news agent. I don’t know about you, but I am not going anywhere without internet connection right now.

Will be right back with the creative writing stuff shortly.

  1. Sis Elviza,

You are fast. I was thinking of posting this on your last entry.

Didn’t our beloved PM tell the press not to be afraid to report the truth? Pak Lah flip flop again.

The reporter was only doing her job. Did she sensationalise Ahmad’s diatribe? No, it was only a few paras.

Sin Chew was the only paper carrying it. The assignment was on was Najib’s trail. Ahmad was not significant enough. So other papers didn’t report it. But this reporter took the initiative.

Reporters are expected to file in 2 stories a day. From one assignment reporters may have to dig extra stories to meet the quota cos they don’t have the time to run around for another story to file in.

    Dear Cheang,

I am not fast, Malaysiakini is!

  2. sigh..

i am ashamed to admit that i’m working with the MSM print.

the PM did tell us not to be afraid of telling the truth? but what truth we are carrying?

    pak lah mudah lupa.

    Dear Sister,

Bukan dia mudah lupa, dia tak pernah tahu apa2! Sheesh.
