Raja Petra released

Blogging live from Shah Alam High Court:

Raja Petra Kamaruddin was released ten minutes ago after Malik Imtiaz Sarwar and his team of lawyers won the hearing of Harbeas Corpus Writ.

I spotted Zorro and Haris Ibrahim outside the courtroom hugging each other amidst a loud cheer and clap from spectators.

Malaysiakini has the report:

Court orders Raja Petra’s release
Hafiz Yatim | Nov 7, 08 9:46am

The Shah Alam High Court this morning ruled that the detention of well-known blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin under the ISA was illegal and ordered his immediate release.

Judge Syed Ahmad Helmy Syed Ahmad said that Raja Petra’s detention was unconstitutional.

He said the Home Minister had not followed proper procedure under Section 8 of the ISA to issue the detention order against Raja Petra.

The judge also ordered that Raja Petra, editor of the popular Malaysia Today website, be produced in court by 4pm today after which he should be immediately released.

Raja Petra is being held at the Kamunting detention camp in Perak.

  1. Puan Lawyer,

What about the rest of the other detainess? Can they be freed as well based on this decision.

The judge is brave to say that Syed Hamid was wrong in issuing the order. Read Malaysiakini.

THank you for the speedy good news

  2. That’s good news. I only knew the meaning of freedom after I’ve been confined myself. One step out of the gate, I can smell a different kind air. Yeah, it smelt kinda difference when you’re on the outside, but one thing for sure I do learned a lot when I was inside.

Anyway, after seeing my hencem face on a larger image I hope you would greet me whenever I passed you by. I’m sure the coffee taste better over there. Sad to say, we don’t have StarBuck here in KK.

Then we can discuss in earnest of going to Afghanistan together (to save the world maybe). Do you think MERCY will let us go? “Keep on dreaming, Bro” I heard that. Now will the real Slim Shady who said that, please stand up?

Greetings and lots of love from Kuale Kangsor.

  3. That Minister has been talking with loads of stupidity and now he is confirmed to have acted with stupidity too.
Thanks for the prompt news. You definitely beat the MSM’s online newspaper.

  4. I’m a bit late with this, but THANKS for including me in the SMS alert, Elviza. Yes, it was a pleasant surprise and good news indeed.

BTW I didn’t like the manner RPK had written his posts. Nor did I believe some of his allegations. However, I didn’t think the use of ISA on him was justified.

RPK wasn’t “a terrorist who plans and does things secretly”, making it extremely hard to gather enough evidence to convict. On the other hand, RPK is the type that is among the most easily-convicted if the evidence is good enough. Whatever he says is for all to see and hear – just load his posts from the Internet, print them and luminate where the offending sentences are.

But the prosecutor then needs to do some homework to prepare a case to convict him. But if he is too lazy, or not technically proficient enough with the finer points of the law, then just let RPK be.

  5. Raja Petra? Talk, write, interview, media conference, caught, rich, judging, court, news on TV, released…I don’t border, doesn’t give any sense of anything…what else…who is he?
