My heart sank looking at the current landscape of Padang, West Sumatra, after being whacked by the earthquake. Leafing through the Star this morning made me cry. Award-winning photos coupled with heart-wrenching reports by intrepid journalist, Shahanaaz Habib, renewed my faith in journalism.
Let’s put aside our differences to help our brothers and sisters in Padang. The port city of Padang is where Marah Rusli set the background of a doomed love story between Siti Nurbaya and Samsul Bahri in his timeless novel, Siti Nurbaya (originally titled as Siti Noerbaja).
Padang is a few hours away from the hilly land of Bukit Tinggi, where my paternal grandparents came from. Also the birth place of Pak Hamka – another great figure in Malay literature.

A few years ago, my friends and I went shopping here *goose bumps*
